Alia Ali, language, art and the world
Alia Ali, of Yemeni, Bosnian, American origins, is a multimedia artist. "As a woman artist from Western Asia, Eastern Europe, but also a citizen of the United States and culturally Muslim although spiritually independent, my work explores cultural binarities, questions culturally sanctioned oppression and confronts dualistic barriers of conflicting notions of gender, politics, media and citizenship. "- Alia Ali
Having traveled to sixty-seven countries, lived in seven and between seven and grown up in five languages, her most comfortable mode of communication is photography, video and installation. Her travels have taken her to deal with the world through interactive experiences and the belief that the damages of written language translation and interpretation have disadvantaged particular communities, resulting in the threat of their exclusion, rather than a means of understanding. Alia's work reflects on the politics of contested notions of linguistics, identity, boundaries, universality, colonization, mental / physical confinement, and the inherent dualism that exists in all of them. The images presented undulate between photography, traditional and digital tales.
Through fabrics, prints and anonymous figures challenge norms and perceptions. Its visual language vibrates and reveals the experiences that shaped it. It seeks to question the place of origin of people, as well as the processes that unite or separate us. It also launches political or identity messages as a pretext for issues such as borders, duality, illusion and reality. The interpretation varies from person to person, but conforms to questioning so that the viewer generates self-reflection. His sensitivity acts as an essential mirror.
