HAJIME SORAYAMA

PRESENTATION

Hajime Sorayama was born in 1947 in Imabari in Japan. The artist is renowned for his illustrations of hyperrealistic pin-ups mixing eroticism, fetishism and science fiction. Sorayama’s work is based on the constant monitoring of the search for beauty in the human body and the machine, has not ceased to receive great international acclamation. He participated in the design of the Aibo robotic dog from Sony.

Hajime Sorayama graduated from the Chubi Central Art School in 1969, and first started by working in an advertising agency. Since he became independent, in 1972, he has established his role as a legendary artist in Japan but also abroad, with his amazing sense of expressive realistic techniques.

The “Sexy Robot” series (1978) allowed him to establish his international reputation.

Representations that integrated the esthetic beauty of the female body into a robotic context have now become a significant influence of a later vision of robotic imagery. In 1999, he won the “Good Design” award (from the Ministry of Trade and Industry) as well as the Grand Prix of the Festival of Media Arts (from the Cultural Affairs Agency) for his work in collaboration with Sony , based on a design concept for their robot 'AIBO'. In 2001, the first generation of 'AIBO' was added to the current collections of the Smithsonian Institute and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and in the same year, Sorayama received another award for his invention of Asahi Newspaper. He is also known for his collaboration with the famous rock band Aerosmith for his work on their album cover ‘Just Push Play’ in 2001.
