JEAN-MARC HUNT
PRESENTATION
Originally from Reunion and Guadeloupe, Jean-Marc Hunt was born in 1974 in Strasbourg (France). He grew up in the suburbs, where he took his mark in the graffiti world and rap music. Settled in Guadeloupe for fifteen years, he wrote a work there with a neo-expressionist figurative workmanship.
Painter and plastic artist, he proceeds by series, accumulation and diversion. His work is often based on the economy of means, evoking a state of emergency with an ironic register. Regularly invited to collective exhibitions and residences, he likes to venture into monumental installation and sculpture projects. Since 2005, he has also distinguished himself in scenography and exhibition curating, in particular with the unifying projects in visual arts that he initiated.
In January 2015, he was promoted to the rank of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the Ministry of Culture and Communication of the French Republic.
He was selected in 2019 to represent Guadeloupe at the Venice Biennale, and will exhibit in 2020, among other places, at the Dakar Biennale, and in various exhibitions in Miami, Albuquerque or Los Angeles
“Hunt tried to reconstruct the initial global chaos from his own colorful perspective. To him, painting is to expose and build. His position does not take into account ideology, aesthetic flattery or self-satisfaction. Its purpose is more to tell than to show. To do this, he chooses means that can be direct, funny, moving and necessarily authentic ”- Christian Bracy, art critic.
