MEHDI-GEORGES LAHLOU

MOROCCO

PRESENTATION

The combinaison of his dual Franco-Moroccan affiliation, a Muslim father and a Catholic mother, Mehdi-Georges happily crosses the borders of our multicultural societies. The artist’s aesthetic, as transversal as his range of media (photography, video, sculpture, installations, performances, etc.) places the individual, the type and representation at the foundation of the works. From these surreal and transgressive scenes of bodies and objects emerge the hidden areas of identities.

Briskly breaking free of stereotypes, the artist plays the troublemakers and disguises his body as he disguises traditions. He knows, by juxtaposition, to remain in this in-between which upsets established convictions. It takes on the stigmas associated with the feminine (stilettos, lipstick, veil), but retains the attributes of its virility (hair, sex, muscles). Dressing up which is therefore not integral, and which thus upsets the norm of gender, social and sexual. It is not a question of "culture shock" but rather of a double confinement: to leave a culture is to be confronted with another culture which encloses again.
